Probably one of the best known travel films out there, based on the true story of Christopher McCandless. Into The Wild follows his journey from college graduate to vagabond. The films centers on his journey to Alaska to live in the wilderness and looks at how the people he meets shape his life.

Departures follows the journey of Canadian travelers Scott Wilson and Justin Lukach as they visit some incredible destinations around the world, with breathtaking cinematography to match. In each episode of the three series they travel to a different destination, visiting the likes of Indonesia, North Korea, Russia, Libya, Brazil, Japan and Iceland.

The story of Walter Mitty follows his transition from his unremarkable life to intrepid adventurer. having worked for the same magazine for the past 16 years there is something missing from his life. Usually reserved and risk averse, Walter embarks on the journey of a lifetime to track down mysterious photographer Sean O’Connell to Greenland.

After the breakdown of her marriage and the death of her mother, Cheryl Strayed played by Reece Witherspoon embarks on a 1,100 mile solo hike along the Pacific Crest Trail. After previous living a destructive life, the film depicts her coming to terms with her loss and the person she has become.

Tracks (IMDb)

Tracks tells the true story of Robyn Davidson, who embarked on a 2,000 mile journey across the Australia Outback from Alice Springs to the Indian Ocean with four camels and her dog.

The Beach (IMDb)

Leonardo Dicaprio plays Richard, a twenty something thrill seeker than ventures to Thailand in search of something more. After coming into possession of map he sets out in search of a tropical paradise, the beach.

A Map For Saturday (IMDb)

The documentary follows Brook Silva-Braga on his year long trip around the world. Interviewing people he meets and documenting his own thoughts the film gives a great insight into solo travel.

Long Way Round (IMDb)

This documentary series follows actors Ewan McGeregor and Charley Boorman on a motorcycle trip from London to New York. The two friends embark on the ultimate road trip through Europe, Russia, Kazakhstan, Mongolia, Alaska then through the USA to New York.

Also worth a watch is the Long Way Down which documents the two friends second trip from John o’Groats, Scotland to Cape Town, South Africa.
